STEP ONE: The Outlet Box.

Probably the most important part of any roof is the outlet box (sometimes called an eave box).

Located at the edge of the roof, it's purpose is to collect the water from the roof and direct it into the down spout.

This is an old outlet.

It is approximately 20 years old.

Notice the cracks in the surrounding roof deck.

Many roofers would try to re-use this old box,
attempting to re-seal around it.

At Clarence Smith Roofing, we replace about
95% of all outlets we encounter.

First, we cut out and remove the old outlet down to the wooden roof deck to allow for better drainage.

We then set modified rubber in the outlet area to prevent leakage caused by outlet overflow.

A new COPPER outlet box is then installed in the outlet area.

Copper outlets have been a standard at Clarence Smith Roofing since 1982.

They are much more durable than aluminum outlets when exposed to heavy winter ice & snow.

Many other roofers still use aluminum outlets;
the savings between an aluminum & copper outlet being a mere $ 5.00.

The gutter sheet for your new roof is then installed over the new outlet.

The outlet is then sealed with roofing cement & four-inch roofing fabric.

A new ball guard screen is installed to prevent large objects from blocking the drain.

The box is caulked on the outside to prevent further leakage caused by outlet overflow.

A notch is made at the top of the outlet to allow water to drain out should ice or debris block the outlet.

Finally, the entire roof (including the outlet area) is coated with aluminum fibered coating.
